My local MP and GLA member. I voted for him at the last election.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jh ... ing120.xml

It annoyed me that he remained a GLA member when he was elevted to parliament, drawing two salaries. It annoyed me when I heard he had dumped his wife and children for a yo9unger model. This really is the last straw, I shan't be voting for him again.

Am I too old fashioned to expect politicians to set high moral standards?

Yes and No. Political figures should be seen to lead by example in public matters, on the salary point anyway.

The personal lives of MPs and political figures however are completely their own and so long as they have nothing to do with their public duties, should not be debated or reported.

So if an MP commits a criminal offence, or is accused of having committed one, it should not be discussed? None of our business?

This bloke is accused of assualting his wife ffs. When an MP is said to have done something like that and there is history of misogeny I'd quite like to know about it before I decide whether to vote for him.

He may have beaten his wife, but that won't prevent him from carrying out his parliamentary duties, so nothing to do with us voters?

I'm surprised you voted for a Tory, Rifleman, I am sure in previous posts you were sympathetic to the BNP. Or am I wrong?

You gave no hint that his wife had been abused. A criminal offence affects his public duties because he could be jailed.

I did vote Liberal once even though I don't believe in their policies. Think it was Mark Oaten or the one who got into trouble with his missus.

Did it because I had had my house burnt down and was rehoused in a hellhole. Lib dems came and sorted things for me so I reckon I had to repay them.

I think you may well be old fashioned, but more likely mad.

As only the certifiably insane would put 'high moral standards' and 'politicians' in the same sentence.

we must surely want, for high salaries , high expectations , politically, socially, morally, ethically, fiscally, emotionally and of their competence at the job. so don't vote for this man, he doesn't deserve your vote ,find someone who does (preferably tory) . on the issue of your old fashionedness , i think you are not old fashioned in your attitudes but to others(the youth) , you may be.

''A criminal offence affects his public duties because he could be jailed.''

I hope Harman gets 6 months in that case. :)

And I understand Tony Bliar's rectal muscles are twitching over Iraqgate too. Oh how the mighty have fallen! :D

Welcome back Rifleman! Where the hell have you been? :p

The chap's private life may be obscene - that's his affair. It's the two-salaries bit that gets me - it would have been a "last straw" for me, not his private life.

The Tories kicked him out of the Party, he's an Independent now. So he won't be your Tory candidate at the next General Election.
